One Gold Krugerrand, or the Entire Mahr of Fāṭimah (RA)?

At a South African nikkah, the coin of honour is the gold Krugerrand. It arrives in a velvet box, it is pressed into the couple’s hands, and nobody at the walimah asks where the custom came from. So here is the question worth putting to a groom, his father, and the uncle writing the cheque. For roughly what one full ounce gold Krugerrand costs, you could instead give the entire Mahr of Sayyidatunā Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها, weighed in silver to the published standard, struck with the words of Allah, and certified in her name. Same money. Very different gift.

Give the gold Krugerrand its due

Let us be fair to the coin first. The gold Krugerrand has been struck since 1967, it carries one full troy ounce of gold in a 22 carat alloy, and it is one of the most recognised bullion coins on earth. As a store of gold, it is excellent. South African Muslims did not choose it carelessly; they chose it because it is real, it is local, and everyone knows what it is worth.

The question is not whether the gold Krugerrand is a good coin. It is whether it is a mahr.

The mahr has its own coin

Every mahr amount in the Sunnah is a weight of silver. The mahr the Prophet ﷺ gave his blessed wives was five hundred dirhams, narrated by ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. The mahr of Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها was twelve ūqiyah, four hundred and eighty dirhams. The Ḥanafī minimum is ten dirhams. The dirham is not a metaphor. It is a silver coin of 3.0618 grams, and our own ʿulamā still publish these weights in rand every month.

Read the last three rows together. A full ounce gold Krugerrand and the complete Mahr Fāṭimī cost within a few percent of each other. One is a bullion coin bearing a springbok, minted for the gold market. The other is forty eight ounces of certified silver carrying a verse of the Qur’an, weighed to the amount recorded in the narrations of the most honoured marriage in our history, and registered in the bride’s name.

And look at the third row. The Single Mahr Coin, which satisfies the Ḥanafī minimum, costs about a twenty sixth of a full ounce gold Krugerrand. The obligation itself, ten dirhams of silver, stood at R1,036.42 on Wifāq’s board. Somewhere along the way a bullion coin became the measure of a groom’s seriousness, and the Sharīʿah’s own measures were forgotten. Young men now delay marriage over a custom the religion never asked of them.

Most families do not give the full ounce. They give a fraction, and Wifāq publishes those too. On their board of 18 August the ladder ran R74,750 for the ounce, R37,450 for a half, R18,900 for a quarter and R8,300 for a tenth. That tenth ounce is the gift that actually changes hands at most nikkahs. It is worth setting beside the Single Mahr Coin at R2,847, which is roughly a third of the price and is the mahr itself rather than a gift alongside it.

A coin struck for the purpose

The Amanah mahr coin was designed to be what a bullion coin was never meant to be. One full troy ounce of 999 fine silver, 41mm across, bearing the verse وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا, “And We created you in pairs” [Surah An-Naba 78:8], with the Kufic inscription في الدنيا والآخرة, “In this World and the Hereafter”, running around the edge. Minted in the UAE, assayed, and certified on the IDCC’s Tayyib blockchain register, so any coin can be verified in seconds from a phone in Johannesburg or Durban.

From that single coin, the full Sunnah amounts are built.

• Mahr Fāṭimī. 48 coins, 1,493 grams, against the published standard of 1,469.7 grams. Above the standard, never below it.
• Mahr al-Azwāj. 50 coins, 1,555.15 grams, against the published standard of 1,530.9 grams. The mahr of the Prophet ﷺ to his blessed wives.
• The Single Mahr Coin. One ounce, 31.103 grams, which meets the ten dirham minimum with a margin above it.

Before you ask about the silver one

Since 2017 the South African Mint has also struck a silver Krugerrand, and you may be holding one. So let us deal with the obvious objection plainly rather than hoping nobody raises it. A plain silver Krugerrand is cheaper than an Amanah mahr coin. Dealers in Dubai list them from roughly R1,300 for a circulated backdated piece to about R2,100 new. Our coin is R2,847.

That difference is not a premium on the silver. It is the engraving of the Qur’anic verse, the Kufic edge, the assay, the tamper evident seal, the IDCC certificate and the blockchain record in the bride’s name. A silver Krugerrand is a bullion coin carrying a springbok, and it is a perfectly good ounce of silver. It was never made for a nikkah. Ours was. If what you want is the cheapest possible ounce, buy the bullion coin and we will not pretend otherwise. If you want the mahr itself struck with the words of Allah and certified in her name, that is what the difference buys.

For the families and the guests

One distinction our elders would want kept clear. The mahr is what the groom gives the bride, named at the nikkah, and it is hers alone. What uncles and family friends press into the couple’s hands afterwards is hadiyyah, a gift, and a beautiful one. A gold Krugerrand from an uncle is a generous hadiyyah. It is the mahr itself that deserves the mahr’s own coin, weighed to the mahr’s own measure.
