Mahr Fatimi – What It Is and Why It Matters

There is a Mahr in Islamic history so beloved, so blessed, so deeply rooted in the Sunnah, that scholars across centuries have returned to it again and again as the standard by which all other Mahrs should be measured. It is the Mahr of Sayyidatunā Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها — daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, wife of Sayyidunā ‘Alī رضي الله عنه, mother of al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما. It is known as Mahr Fatimi.

The Story of the Most Blessed Mahr

Sayyidunā ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه was among the most beloved of the companions – raised in the household of the Prophet ﷺ himself. When the time came to seek the hand of Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها in marriage, the Prophet ﷺ asked him:

“What do you have?”

‘Alī رضي الله عنه had little in the way of worldly wealth. He offered his coat of armour — a ḥuṭamiyyah, a battle-worn shield. The Prophet ﷺ accepted it. The Mahr was fixed at 480 dirhams of silver — approximately 1,428 grams of pure silver by scholarly consensus on the weight of the dirham.

Think about that for a moment. The Prophet ﷺ — who could have asked for anything — fixed the Mahr of his own daughter, the leader of the women of Paradise, at a specific, measured, attainable weight of silver. Not gold bars. Not palaces. Not an impossible sum designed to delay marriage. A real, physical, tangible amount — silver — that a man of modest means could gather and present with dignity.

Why Is It Called Mahr Fatimi?

The term “Mahr Fatimi” describes the Mahr amount given to Sayyidatunā Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها — and by extension, the recommended Mahr standard for Muslims who wish to follow the Sunnah in their marriage. It represents:

  • Authenticity — rooted in the actual nikāḥ of the Prophet’s ﷺ daughter
  • Moderation — substantial but attainable, not a burden that delays marriage
  • Blessing — many scholars consider it the most spiritually recommended Mahr amount
  • Justice — it protects the wife with real, lasting value

How Much Is Mahr Fatimi Today?

The Mahr Fatimi is denominated in dirhams of silver. The scholarly consensus places the weight of one dirham at approximately 2.975 grams of pure silver.

Mahr Fatimi = 480 dirhams × 2.975g = 1,428 grams of pure silver

At current silver prices, this equates to approximately:

Currency Approximate Value
AED (UAE Dirham) AED 22,000 – 26,000
GBP (British Pound) £4,800 – £5,600
USD (US Dollar) $6,000 – $7,000
SAR (Saudi Riyal) SAR 22,500 – 26,500

Prices fluctuate with the silver market. Amanah Gold prices its Mahr products live against the silver spot price — what you pay is always accurate to the market on the day of purchase.

Mahr Fatimi vs Mahr Azwaj — What Is the Difference?

Mahr Fatimi

Ali (r.a) to Fatima (r.a)

480 dirhams of silver
≈ 1,428 grams pure silver

The most widely cited Mahr standard in Islamic jurisprudence. Named after the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ.

Mahr Azwaj

The Prophet ﷺ to His Wives

500 dirhams of silver
≈ 1,487.5 grams pure silver

The Mahr of the Prophet ﷺ to the Mothers of the Believers. Narrated by A’ishah رضي الله عنها in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.

Why Silver, Not Cash?

A Mahr of £5,000 in cash today may be worth £3,500 in ten years due to inflation. A Mahr of 1,428 grams of silver today will still be 1,428 grams of silver in ten years — and in twenty years. Silver does not inflate. It cannot be printed by a government. It cannot be devalued by a central bank.

The Prophet ﷺ and the Ṣaḥābah رضي الله عنهم lived in a silver-based monetary economy for good reason. When you give Mahr Fatimi in pure silver, you are giving your wife a form of wealth that has protected purchasing power across 1,400 years of Islamic history. That is what security looks like.
