It is one of the most searched questions among Muslims preparing for marriage \u2014 and one of the least satisfactorily answered. Ask a family in Dubai and they might say 250,000 AED! Ask a Muslim in Manchester, and he may have no idea at all. Ask a scholar in Lahore and he may say ten dirhams. Ask a family in Jeddah and they may say fifty thousand riyals. The truth, as always, is in the Sunnah \u2014 and it is more nuanced, more practical, and more beautiful than most people realise.<\/p>\n\n

What the Qur’\u0101n Says<\/h2>\n\n

All\u0101h \ufdfb gives two clear principles in the Qur’\u0101n regarding Mahr:<\/p>\n\n

Give it.<\/strong> S\u016brah al-Nis\u0101’ (4:4) commands: “Give the women their bridal gifts graciously.”<\/em> The word far\u012b\u1e0dah<\/em> used elsewhere (4:24) means it is an obligation \u2014 a religious duty, not a custom.<\/p>\n\n

Do not withhold it.<\/strong> Even in the scenario of divorce before consummation, S\u016brah al-Baqarah (2:237) still requires payment of a portion. The Mahr obligation does not disappear under difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n\n

What the Sunnah Says<\/h2>\n\n

The Prophet \ufdfa approved Mahr in many forms and amounts \u2014 from an iron ring to gold, from Qur’\u0101nic verses to armour. This diversity is deliberate. The Sunnah does not impose a uniform Mahr on all Muslims across all economic circumstances. It sets a spirit \u2014 generosity, sincerity, real value \u2014 and leaves the amount to the couple and their families.<\/p>\n\n

However, the Prophet \ufdfa did set one specific, beloved standard. When his daughter F\u0101\u1e6dimah \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627 married ‘Al\u012b \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647, he fixed her Mahr at 480 dirhams of silver<\/strong> – approximately 1,428 grams. This is known as Mahr Fatimi<\/strong>, the primary Sunnah benchmark.<\/p>\n\n

The Prophet \ufdfa also gave his own wives a Mahr of 12 \u016bqiyyah and a nashsh \u2014 equivalent to 500 dirhams<\/strong>, approximately 1,487.5 grams of silver. This is Mahr Azwaj<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

What the Scholars Say \u2014 By Madhab<\/h2>\n\n

\u1e24anaf\u012b<\/h3>\n

Minimum Mahr: 10 dirhams of silver<\/strong> (approximately 29.75 grams \u2014 roughly AED 360 \/ \u00a365 \/ $80 at current prices). This is the legal floor. Most \u1e24anaf\u012b scholars strongly recommend going well beyond the minimum as a matter of honour and generosity.<\/p>\n\n

M\u0101lik\u012b<\/h3>\n

No fixed minimum. Any amount with monetary value suffices. M\u0101lik\u012b scholars emphasise that Mahr should reflect the bride’s social standing \u2014 the concept of mahr al-mithl<\/em> (customary Mahr).<\/p>\n\n

Sh\u0101fi’\u012b<\/h3>\n

No fixed minimum. Any amount of value \u2014 even half a dirham \u2014 is technically valid. Scholars consistently advise generosity.<\/p>\n\n

\u1e24anbal\u012b<\/h3>\n

No fixed minimum. Equally emphatic that the Mahr must be paid and must never be waived under pressure.<\/p>\n\n

The consensus across all schools:<\/strong> There is no maximum. And the spirit of the obligation demands more than the legal minimum.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

What Mahr Looks Like in 2026 \u2014 By Region<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n

UAE and the Gulf<\/h3>\n

In the UAE, Mahr has historically been very high – often AED 50,000\u2013200,000 or more \u2014 driven by cultural expectations rather than religious requirement. This has contributed to a well-documented marriage crisis in certain regions. Saudi scholars and the government have repeatedly called for Mahr to be brought back to a Sunnah-aligned level. Mahr Fatimi at current silver prices: approximately AED 22,000\u201326,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Since 1973, Sheikh Zayed had called for a limit to dowries and wedding expenses. In 1997, Sheikh Zayed issued Federal Law No. 21 fixing marriage dowries and costs. The law also stipulated that the marriage festivities should not last longer than one day, and a maximum of nine camels should be slaughtered for the occasion. Those contravening the law could be subject to a fine of Dh500,000 or a prison sentence, and lose the government marriage grant.<\/p>\n\n

It would appear the law is not being observed to the fullest, as the government has had to remind people of the law’s existence. Now, though, many couples recognise the financial drain and resort to mass weddings to reduce expenditure. This is very much in line with Sheikh Zayed’s thinking, which was to put an end to all the lavish costs and waste. In alignment with the Sunnah.<\/p>\n\n

United Kingdom<\/h3>\n

UK Muslims, particularly those of South Asian heritage, face enormous social pressure around Mahr. Figures cited on Muslim marriage platforms range from \u00a3500 to \u00a350,000 \u2014 with no consistent standard. The opposite problem \u2014 token Mahrs of \u00a31 given purely as a formality \u2014 is equally common and equally problematic. A Sunnah-aligned benchmark for UK Muslims: Mahr Fatimi in silver equates to approximately \u00a34,800\u2013\u00a35,600<\/strong> at current prices. Substantial, meaningful, and attainable for most working Muslim men.<\/p>\n\n

Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India<\/h3>\n

Mahr is often set symbolically in South Asian communities \u2014 sometimes as little as one rupee or one pound, with a larger “cultural” dowry system operating in parallel. Many scholars have called for Muslims to return to the Sunnah standard of silver-based Mahr.<\/p>\n\n

Malaysia and Southeast Asia<\/h3>\n

Malaysian Muslims typically follow Sh\u0101fi’\u012b jurisprudence. Mahr practice varies widely by state. Urban communities often treat Mahr as largely symbolic \u2014 a trend scholars have cautioned against.<\/p>\n\n

The Real Question \u2014 What Can You Afford?<\/h2>\n\n

The Prophet \ufdfa never intended Mahr to be a barrier to marriage. He said: “Marry, even with an iron ring.”<\/em>[Bukhari 5150]. He said: “The best Mahr is the easiest one.”<\/em> (Ab\u016b D\u0101w\u016bd)<\/p>\n\n

At the same time, he set the standard of Mahr Fatimi \u2014 480 dirhams of silver \u2014 not as a ceiling but as a respected benchmark. The principle: give the most you can, without creating hardship for yourself or your family.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The Case for Silver Mahr in 2026<\/h2>\n\n

When you agree a Mahr of \u00a35,000 in cash, that \u00a35,000 will be worth less every year due to inflation. Over ten years, at modest inflation rates, its real purchasing power may fall by 20\u201330%.<\/p>\n\n

When you give Mahr Fatimi in 1,428 grams of pure silver<\/strong>, that silver is worth 1,428 grams of silver today, tomorrow, and in twenty years.
