There is a Mahr in Islamic history so beloved, so blessed, so deeply rooted in the Sunnah, that scholars across centuries have returned to it again and again as the standard by which all other Mahrs should be measured. It is the Mahr of Sayyidatun\u0101 F\u0101\u1e6dimah \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627 \u2014 daughter of the Prophet \ufdfa, wife of Sayyidun\u0101 ‘Al\u012b \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647, mother of al-\u1e24asan and al-\u1e24usayn \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645\u0627. It is known as Mahr Fatimi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The Story of the Most Blessed Mahr<\/h2>\n\n

Sayyidun\u0101 ‘Al\u012b ibn Ab\u012b \u1e6c\u0101lib \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647 was among the most beloved of the companions – raised in the household of the Prophet \ufdfa himself. When the time came to seek the hand of F\u0101\u1e6dimah \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627 in marriage, the Prophet \ufdfa asked him:<\/p>\n\n

“What do you have?”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

‘Al\u012b \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647 had little in the way of worldly wealth. He offered his coat of armour \u2014 a \u1e25u\u1e6damiyyah<\/em>, a battle-worn shield. The Prophet \ufdfa accepted it. The Mahr was fixed at 480 dirhams of silver<\/strong> \u2014 approximately 1,428 grams of pure silver by scholarly consensus on the weight of the dirham.<\/p>\n\n

Think about that for a moment. The Prophet \ufdfa \u2014 who could have asked for anything \u2014 fixed the Mahr of his own daughter, the leader of the women of Paradise, at a specific, measured, attainable weight of silver. Not gold bars. Not palaces. Not an impossible sum designed to delay marriage. A real, physical, tangible amount \u2014 silver \u2014 that a man of modest means could gather and present with dignity.<\/p>\n\n

Why Is It Called Mahr Fatimi?<\/h2>\n\n

The term “Mahr Fatimi” describes the Mahr amount given to Sayyidatun\u0101 F\u0101\u1e6dimah \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627 \u2014 and by extension, the recommended Mahr standard for Muslims who wish to follow the Sunnah in their marriage. It represents:<\/p>\n\n
